ChatGPT Team and Enterprise plans provide data privacy guarantees — conversations are not used to train OpenAI's models, and data is encrypted at rest and in transit. The free and Plus plans may use conversations for model improvement unless users opt out. For regulated industries, Enterprise plans offer additional compliance features including SOC 2 certification and custom data retention policies.

GPT-4o is OpenAI's flagship multimodal model with the highest capability across reasoning, creativity, and accuracy. GPT-4o mini is a smaller, faster, and more cost-effective model designed for simpler tasks where speed matters more than depth. Free users primarily access GPT-4o mini, while Plus and higher tiers get extensive GPT-4o access with higher rate limits.

ChatGPT is best used as an augmentation tool rather than a replacement for human workers. It excels at drafting content, summarising information, generating code snippets, and automating repetitive tasks. However, it requires human oversight for accuracy, cannot make judgement calls in ambiguous situations, and lacks the contextual understanding that comes from domain expertise and institutional knowledge.

Custom GPTs are specialised versions of ChatGPT configured with specific instructions, knowledge files, and capabilities. Any Plus, Team, or Enterprise user can create them through a no-code builder by providing instructions and uploading reference documents. Custom GPTs can be shared privately with team members or published publicly in the GPT Store. They can also use API actions to connect with external services.

Key limitations include occasional hallucinations where the model generates plausible but incorrect information, a knowledge cutoff date that may not reflect the most recent events, usage rate limits that can interrupt intensive workflows, and inability to access real-time information unless web browsing is enabled. The model also struggles with complex multi-step mathematical reasoning and may produce inconsistent results across sessions.

ChatGPT is a consumer-facing product with a chat interface, while the OpenAI API is a developer platform for building custom AI applications. The API offers more granular control over model parameters, supports batch processing, provides programmatic access to all OpenAI models, and uses pay-per-token pricing. Developers use the API to embed AI capabilities into their own products, while ChatGPT is designed for direct end-user interaction.
